How do hoverboards blow up?

As a hoverboard fan, you've probably read stories and seen the odd hoverboard blow up video. Don't worry - hoverboard technology has really progressed in recent years and exploding boards are a rarity.

Do all hoverboards blow up?

Very few hoverboards blow up and those that do, are usually of an inferior quality. Hoverboards that have passed CE Certification tests (such as all the boards at Official Hoverboard) don't blow up. Here are some of the reasons why a hoverboard might explode and burst into flames.

Battery

The primary cause of hoverboard explosions and fires is the battery - that's why it's important to invest in a model with a good quality battery. If you overcharge a segway/hoverboard, it can overheat the lithium-ion battery that powers the device. Always keep your hoverboard battery dry. When buying a hoverboard, choose something with a good battery, such as the Black Vortex Camo 10" All Terrain Official Hoverboard, which comes with a premium SAMSUNG cell battery pack as standard.

Wiring

A hoverboard blowing up can also be caused by faulty wiring, which can result in a spark. Check your wires. If they are crimped or exposed, they are more at risk of developing a fault and short circuiting. Before going on a ride, give your hoverboard a shake and listen carefully, to make sure there is nothing loose inside.

Charging

Make sure that you are using a safe, certified charger with the right voltage - always stick to a charger that the manufacturer has supplied or that an expert has recommended. Don't leave the hoverboard charging overnight and allow it to cool down after use, before recharging. Always charge the hoverboard away from flammable materials and don't overcharge.

Weight

Check the manufacturer's instructions and take note of the weight limits of your hoverboard. Do not exceed them. Doing so is highly unlikely to cause a fire, but it won't do your hoverboard any good.

Which hoverboards blow up?

Hoverboards that are manufactured cheaply, in bulk, are often not quality checked. Corners are cut and safety is often one of the first things to be overlooked.

Sometimes, metal shavings are loose in the mechanics of the engine and can cause problems. Loose fittings can also short circuit a hoverboard and as we said earlier, cheap batteries of an inferior quality are the worst offenders when it comes to hoverboard explosions and fires.

Always buy from a reputable seller such as Official Hoverboard if you want to avoid a hoverboard blowing up. All our products are UL and CE certified. We have never had any reports of fire or explosions from our customers. It is incredibly unlikely that you will experience these problems with one of our hoverboards. Every product sold by Official Hoverboard has undergone rigorous safety tests and is of the highest quality.
